GSL Medical College organises LSS for the first time in India

LAPROSCOPIC SURGICAL SKILLS PROGRAM – GSL MEDICAL COLLEGE

Five days long CME on Basic Skills of Lap Cholecystectomy is being conducted GSL Medical College, Rajahmundry from 16th to 20th September, 2013, coordinated by Prof Jacek Jerzy Jakimowicz MD, PhD, FRCS, Ed. He holds the position of the Chair Safety in Healthcare, faculty of Industrial Design Engineering at the Technical University Delft, Netherlands. The Course Director is Dr. Ganni Bhaskara Rao MS, FICS, Dr. Y.V.Sarma is the Chief Controller and the Course Coordinator is Dr. Samir Ranjan Nayak, MS. A total of 21 Surgical Residents and Faculty are participating in this Certification Course organized for the very first time in India, accredited by the European Association for Endoscopic Surgeons at GSL Medical College. 

This course is most useful for Post Graduate Students, Practicing Surgeons and everyone who is keen on enhancing their laparoscopic skills. It also allows the participants to apply for online up gradation to next level in future.   The next course is scheduled to be held in January 2014.

GSL Medical College is providing hands on training to medical post graduate students at their Simulator Lab of International standards to improve the efficiency in laparoscopic surgery (Laparoscopic skills – LSS).

Without any old conventional incision (resulting in cosmetic disfigurement) through a small keyhole made over the abdomen the microscopic camera and slim surgical instruments introduced into abdomen the surgical procedure is monitored through on screen live visualisation. 

Dr.Ganni Bhaskara Rao is one among the few surgeons of first generation trainees of 1990 in keyhole Lap surgery from India.

Simulator can be compared to a video game. The sounds of running car crashes etc. give a live feeling to player. Simulator gives a more real time feeling than a video game. The entire human structure with intricate internal details is computerized to give a real tactile experience of handling tissues at the time operating through simulator. The practicing doctor feels as though he is operating on a live person than a computerized model. The learning doctor’s performance is evaluated by simulator through numerical scoring and guides to get over the obstacles and makes the doctor more and more skilful.

The training program on simulator is developed by European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES) and it is recognized by World Health Organization. Dr. Ganni Bhaskara Rao and Dr.Samir Nayak already visited Europe twice and got trained. They contributed their experience in laparoscopy to researchers.

Birth of baby weighing 5.5 Kgs. Mother and child healthy.

The average birth weight of a new born baby is around 2.8 Kgs. It is not unusual to be born with 2.5 to 3.5 Kgs weight. But a baby with 5.5 Kgs birth weight is quite unusual and is born at GSL General Hospital, Rajahmundry.

Birth weight of 6.2 Kgs was reported from Libia – a world record. Birth of a child with 5.5 Kgs is quite rare and unusual in Indian scenario – expressed Dr.V.Sarojin Professor of Gyn and Obstetrics, GSL Gen. Hospital, Rajahmundry.

Smt. Karimi Devi aged about 20 years resident of Pera Ramachandrapuram near Anaparthi of East Godavari District gave birth to this child with rare birth weight. She was admitted with labor pains of one day duration. And because of overweighing baby a caesarian section became inevitable – Dr Sraojini reiterated.

The father of this child is an auto driver and their earlier issue was also a over weighing baby of 4 Kgs at the time of birth.

It is common to have over weight babies in diabetic parents. But the baby’s parents are not diabetics. There are no specific reasons to assign for over birth weight in this case.The caesarian surgery was contemplated by team of Doctors – Dr.K.Bharatha Lakshmi, Dr.J.V.Rao, Dr. Karthiki. The mother and newborn are under observation. They do not present any health problem and after satisfactory recovery mother and baby will be discharged from the hospital.

                The surgery is performed free of cost under “Janani Suraksh Scheme” added Dr.Lakshmi Prasad, Chief Executive officer, GSL General Hospital, Rajahmundry.

Penetrating Cement Piece in Brain

A rare Neurological Surgical Intervention at GSL General Hospital, Rajahmundry by Neuro Surgeon Dr.M.Phani Kumar

 

Emani Ramana Sastry, A male aged about 36 years, purohit by profession living in Buttayigudem of West Godavari  conducted a marriage on the night of 31.05.2013. On the return at 4.30 a.m. he took a nap on the road side cement bench at out skirts of Bhadrachalam. 

A car hit the bench and the bench shattered in to pieces and the purohit was thrown far off. During accident he sustained a Lacerated Penetrating Head Injury on the right side and developed paralysis of left side. He was moved to Government Hospital, Bhadrachalam, where the wound was sutured and referred to GSL General Hospital, Rajahmundry. 

The CT scan Brain done was suggestive of Right Parietal Compound Depressed Fracture along with a suspicious foreign body. Emergency surgery was performed under Aarogyasri and to Surgeons surprise a Sharp edged wedge shaped solid cement piece measuring 4X2 cm and weighing 4.130 grams was found to be lodged deep in the Brain tissue, which was removed by GSL Medical College Hospital Nuero Surgen Dr M Phanikumar 

This is a unique incidence where a shattered cement piece acted as a missile and penetrated the skull bone to find itself in the brain tissue and thereby injuring the brain resulting in Paralysis. Foreign bodies of metallic nature like bullets ,sharp objects like toys etc., were known earlier to cause penetrating brain injury but a shattered stone piece from a broken bench on which the patient was taking rest during Road Traffic Accident  , causing the similar injury was not known 

Consequent on surgery under Arogyasree Scheme, patient completely recovered from Left Hemiplegia and discharged today in a complete normal status back into his profession explained Dr Ganni Bhaskara Rao Surgeon and also the chairman of GSL Medical College and General Hospital, Rajahmundry.

Madida Ramakishna male aged 40 yrs resident of Turpupalem (v), Malkipuram Mandal, Amalapuram developed severe protrusion and diminished vision of left eye.

He consulted several doctors and no surgery was attempted. He attended to GSL General Hospital attached to GSL Medical College, Rajahmundry where intra orbital tumor was diagnosed and was operated by neurosurgeon Dr.Phanikumar.

Post operatively the tumor biopsy suggestive of tumor arising from lacrimal gland. The critical stage of surgery is that the tumor was operated through cranial approach by pushing brain towards midline and cutting bony roof plate of orbit. The tumor was found to be occupying 3/4th of orbital cavity, eroding orbital roof and penetrating into cranial cavity.

Had it been not operated, the possible transformation of growth into malignancy might erode extensively the orbital cavity, displacing or penetrating brain substance, resulting in possible paralysis, complete loss of vision in left eye and eventual death from brain damage.

The surgery took around 6 hours on 13 th april and after surgery there is cosmetic improvement and improvement in vision. He is to be discharged in 3or 4days

A major health catastrophe is averted due to timely planned surgery, reiterated Dr.Ganni Bhaskara Rao, Chairman, GSL Medical College.
